Domestic Goddesses: Need Aha! Moments

I want to spruce up the apartment. I'm tired of feeling like I live in a Salvation Army. I am accepting ideas from any and all.

Big issues:

Lots of toy pieces all around - I've tried storing them together, but they end up all over the place.

Books. Lots of 'em. I give away some, but I have tons - throwing out not an option. Attractive and interesting storage ideas, anyone?

Colors. Ideas. Living room walls in particular. I like an amber look with crimson, very exotic, but don't know how to translate to the walls.

Ikea has some really cute Kid's toy storage stuff. What about a trunk? You could get and unfinished wooden one at Michaels, and the boys could help you paint it.

Books are also a big problem for me. I'm going to start putting them into storage, and maybe trying to hide them a little. Target has these cute little cubes that are meant for their cubical things, but they work really well on regular bookshelves. I think I'm going to get a couple of those and fill them with the books, and maybe that will make it look less cluttered.

So you want to paint crimson and amber? How about finding a more neutral color for the walls, and do the trim in the bright red, or the curtains, and some art?

Or just go for it with the red walls!

I love Ikea, but I end up buying a lot of crap I have no use for. I need to go on a scouting mission. I need someone to actually help me do this at the end of the day because Mike just won't.

AUGH.
